First Name: Ion
Last Name: Constantinescu
Story: While finishing computer science in Bucharest, Romania I created for a US company the base of a real-time financial system for trading of bonds, putting together a team of 14 people; the US company was acquired recently. 2000-2005 I did my PhD on Service Composition at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne in the Artificial Intelligence Lab which I finished in 2006 with approx 30 publications. During this time I was involved in several research projects in the field, also in management roles. In 2006 I created service2service, a system for personal location-based mobile services that was partially used in a project with the national Swiss carrier. In 2007 I moved to the US and at the beginning of 2008 I founded San Francisco based OPT.IM (Digital Optim LLC).
Company: A new, extremely dynamic economic model, where multiple business services are optimally connected together based on characteristics of each end-user job. Our first product, colorsilike.com, is a marketplace and content authoring system connecting designers and printing companies to end-customers (e.g., marketing departments). Our goal is to provide to end-customers the best choice for printing as well as better branding control (e.g., head offices can "lock" some branding options available to branch offices).
Company Name: opt.im - Digital Optim LLC
Product Description: colorsilike.com allows end-customers to simplify their job while improving their efficiency. By using our template-based system they can have results fast and easy while allowing branding consistency across the organization. Regarding efficiency they can choose the best choice for printing based on the number of copies and shipping options of their job. Designers that have popular templates published in our system are able to generate revenue streams; that would be an incentive for the creation of high-quality content. Printing companies are able to receive more jobs.
Difference: Our company is creating a new way for business services to interact with each-other that will result in simpler usage and increased efficiency.
Passion: Passionate about my work. I try to put a bit of soul in anything I do.
Inspiration: Universal, renaissance figures like Leonardo da Vinci.
Motivation: The thrill of the "next" step for the day while thinking about the progress achieved the day before.
Success: First page of results on Google for "Ion Constantinescu"; speaking in front of audiences of thousands of people; best student paper award.
Challenge: Listen to the business needs of your customer while trying to put technology in the background.
Advice: Try to put passion in any piece of work that you do; otherwise, if possible, don't do it.
Website: http://opt.im
Calling: I believe in improving our lives by creating tomorrow solutions for today problems. In order to do that, a person needs to blend knowledge regarding current research advances with a deep understanding of business principles.
Keywords: service optimization planning artificial intelligence
Business Model: We facilitate interactions between business services and we take a commission on the payment. In the colorsilike.com case we take a percentage of the total cost of the printing job that could include the licensing for art. In the case of digitally delivered art we take a fee for the rendering of the art in high-resolution,
Pain: Complex service interactions are inherently hard to handle while current basic solutions might produce sub-optimal results. End customers targeted by colorsilike.com want to produce results (e.g., marketing materials) fast and cheap while sometime they need to adhere to a common branding line. Current platforms that host user-generated-content (i.e., designs) don't normally provide incentives based on quality to creators.
